Sources: Norwich City to sound out Smith about manager's job after Lampard latest

Norwich City are set to sound out Dean Smith about his interest in making an immediate Premier League return, Football Insider understands.

This site broke the news yesterday afternoon that the Canaries have opened talks with Frank Lampard about taking over as their new manager.

But a City source has told Football Insider the availability of Smith will also lead to contact being made about his potential interest in the post.

The Carrow Road outfit are searching for a new manager after sacking Daniel Farke in the immediate wake of their Saturday victory over Brentford.

Lampard, 43, is keen to take over at Norwich and return to management at the top level.

He has been out of working since being sacked by Chelsea in January.

Smith is a proven Premier League manager with greater experience in both the top flight and the Championship.

His CV includes a Championship promotion at Villa as well as transforming the fortunes of his previous clubs Brentford and Walsall.

Smith is also renowned for implementing an attacking playing style that is similar to the one overseen by Farke at Norwich.

The German was immensely popular among supporters for the club’s two Championship-winning campaigns in three years but paid the price for the team’s Premier League troubles.

Norwich secured their first win of the season on Saturday but go into the international break anchored at the foot of the table.

They have just five points from 11 league fixtures and are five points adrift of safety.

In other news, the door has opened for Rangers to sign Billy Gilmour from Norwich City in January.
