Nottingham Forest are readying a summer bid for Gillingham captain Kyle Dempsey, Football Insider has learned.
The 25-year-old was of interest to Forest, Preston North End, Barnsley and Luton in the January window but remained at Priestfield beyond the transfer deadline.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Chris Hughton’s side are set to reignite their interest in the midfielder who is valued by the League One club at between £500,000-£750,000.
Dempsey has been one of Gillingham’s standout players this season, with his 42 appearances across all competitions yielding eight goals and five assists.
His performances have helped the Gills climb to 10th in League One and five points off the play-off spots.
The Englishman joined Gillingham in August of last year following his release from Fleetwood Town but the club did not disclose the length of his contract.
A product of Carlisle’s academy, Dempsey has enjoyed spells at Huddersfield, Peterborough United and Fleetwood since leaving his boyhood club.
Dempsey produced his best form at Carlisle in the 2014/15 campaign, where he contributed 10 goals and 10 assists in 43 appearances in League Two.
His form attracted the interest of Huddersfield and in July 2015 he moved to the John Smith’s Stadium in a £378,000 deal.
The move perhaps came too soon for Dempsey as he struggled to establish himself in the Terriers starting XI.
However, Nottingham Forest are confident the midfielder will succeed if he steps up to the Championship at the second time of asking.
