Sources: Nottingham Forest submit seven-figure Holmes bid

Nottingham Forest have submitted a £1.5million bid for Reading centre-back Tom Holmes, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 21-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the London outfit and is yet to commit to new terms.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Forest have launched an offer to prise the young centre-back from the Championship rivals.

Reading may be under pressure to sell to comply with EFL rules.

The EFL confirmed this summer the Royals have been placed under a transfer embargo for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Player sales are one way for the club to balance the books.

Reading have already seen Michael Olise depart for a “record fee” to join Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, the likes of Sone Aluko, Omar Richards, Sam Smith and Sam Walker all left on free transfers.

Forest are hoping to take advantage of Holmes’ contract situation and secure his capture for a reasonable fee.

A graduate of the Reading academy, the defender has established himself as a first-team regular in the last 12 months.

He played 39 times in the Championship last term, with a hamstring injury limiting his game time between October and November,

A versatile centre-back, Holmes has also featured as a right-back on occasion.

He has European experience under his belt too, having spent part of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Belgian second-tier side Roeselare.

Holmes started and captained the Royals in their 3-0 defeat to Swansea City on Tuesday (10th August).

However, he has only played two minutes in the club’s two Championship fixtures so far.
