Dean Henderson's permanent move to Nottingham Forest has hit a stumbling block, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed Man United, the 26-year-old's parent club, will not sanction an exit for the England international until a resolution can be found in talks with first-choice shot-stopper David de Gea.

It is believed Man United are keen to draft in a new top-quality goalkeeper to rival the Spaniard - but there is a willingness from all parties to seal a renewal despite his concerns.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday (16 June) that "discussions are ongoing" with De Gea as they published their retained list.

Meanwhile, the hold-up means the Old Trafford club are unwilling to sanction Henderson's permanent move to Nottingham Forest.

He spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at the City Ground and was the first-choice shot-stopper before an injury curtailed his season.

The England international kept six clean sheets in 20 games before suffering a thigh injury in January - but is expected to return in time for pre-season ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Henderson’s contract at Man United, which nets him a reported £100,000-a-week, is set to expire in June 2025.

He previously rivalled De Gea for the number-one jersey at Old Trafford, and has made 29 appearances for the club - keeping 13 clean sheets.

However, he hit out at the Red Devils as he left for Forest last summer (2022), slamming the “criminal” treatment which saw him play just 278 minutes of action in the 2021-22 season.

Wayne Hennessy is currently the only goalkeeper on the books at Nottingham Forest.
