Mauricio Pochettino has gone on the charm offensive to help Tottenham seal the signing of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis in a deal worth a total of £100million, Football Insider can reveal.
The Champions League runners-up have been working all summer on trying to prise the Argentina international, 23, from Spain and they are hopeful are deal can be done before next month’s transfer cut-off.
A source with knowledge of Tottenham’s recruitment has told Football Insider that manager Pochettino has held telephone conversations with his countryman in an attempt to push the deal over the finish line.
The Spurs boss has told Lo Celso how highly he rates him, how his coaching staff can help take his game to the next level and where he would fit into the team next season.
Tottenham are ready to offer £60million including add-ons for Lo Celso as well as a salary package worth a minimum £150,000-a-week over five years, amounting to £100million in total.
The Londoners hope they can beat the attacking midfielder’s other suitors, including Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, to add him to their other marquee signing made this summer, Tanguy Ndombele.
As revealed by Football Insider last month, Lo Celso has told friends he is eager to move to the Premier League and join Spurs.
Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear to the Tottenham hierarchy that he regards Lo Celso as an outstanding footballer who can be a key player for the club in years to come.
The 18-times international was hugely impressive for Betis last season with 16 goals and six assists from 45 matches in all competitions, with nearly all of those coming in the key La Liga and Europa League competitions.
