Sources: Porto plotting sensational move to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Man United

Porto are plotting a sensational move to sign Man United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Football Insider understands.

The Portuguese giants believe the door has opened for the all-time great to make a romantic return to his homeland this summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Porto are monitoring Ronaldo’s situation going into the summer and could make a move if given encouragement.

There is a sense among those close to Man United that the 37-year-old would be interested in a return to Portugal nearly two decades after he left Sporting Lisbon.

He will have another year on his United contract this summer after joining from Juventus on a two-year deal.

However, Porto believe the former Real Madrid and Juventus star could be convinced to move on this summer.

Ronaldo has enjoyed a fruitful return to Old Trafford on the pitch, scoring 18 goals in 32 appearances.

He scored nine in 13 appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before his sacking in November.

His return has slightly diminished under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, with six goals in 16 games.

However, the veteran forward has been a mainstay this season, missing only five games across all competitions.

He is still captain of Portugal’s national side and made his 184th international appearance against Serbia in November.

Porto are cautiously optimistic that Ronaldo could be tempted by a surprise return back home this summer.

A graduate of the Sporting Lisbon academy, he made 31 first-team appearances as a teenager before joining United.

He has played a total of 324 times and scored 136 goals for the Red Devils.
