Sources: QPR star Masterson agrees to join Gillingham

QPR defender Conor Masterson has agreed a deal to join Gillingham, Football Insider understands.

The former Liverpool youth star, 23, spent the first half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Cambridge United in League One before being recalled earlier this month.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that QPR have now agreed to send the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international to Gillingham for the second half of the campaign.

The Kent-based club have won the race over multiple EFL rivals.

Masterson made 21 appearances for Cambridge with the club 12th in League One.

Before he joined the club on loan, he had made 20 appearances for QPR after joining the club from Liverpool in July 2019.

Masterson joined Liverpool as a 16-year-old and worked his way up to captain of the Under 18s.

He was also handed a place on the bench for the senior side’s FA Cup clash against Exeter City in January 2016.

He was also named on the bench for Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final victory against Manchester City in April 2018 as well as in the Premier League squad against Everton during the same month.

However, he was released at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Last January (2021) he joined Swindon Town on loan but only made five appearances in League One.

Gillingham are fighting to stay in League One as they lie 23rd in the table, nine points from safety.

They are next in action against Oxford United tomorrow afternoon (29 January).

In other news, Liverpool have booked a medical as they move closer to landing a £50million signing.
