Rangers have had a £1.5million bid rejected by Brighton for defender Connor Goldson, Football Insider sources understand.

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has made Goldson one of his top targets as he looks to bolster his side’s defensive options ahead of next season.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that a number of English Championship sides are also monitoring Goldson’s situation at Brighton, but Rangers are the first to firm up their interest with a bid.

Rangers have already secured deals for Scott Arfield and Allan MacGregor this summer and despite his initial bid for Goldson rejected Gerrard is expected to come back with another offer for the defender in a bid to lure Goldson to Ibrox.

Goldson found himself playing a back-up role at Brighton this season with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy the preferred centre-back partnership at the Amex Stadium.

The 25-year-old joined Brighton from Shrewsbury in 2015 and was a regular in their line-ups in the Championship, but his career was put on hold when he required heart surgery in February 2017.

Goldson, who made eight appearances this season, is thought to be keen on a move away from Brighton this summer in search of regular first-team football.
