Sources: Reading open talks to sign ex-Newcastle United star Carroll
Reading are in talks to sign former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll on a free transfer, Football Insider has learned.
Carroll is a free agent after leaving St James’ Park when his contract expired at the end of June.
A Reading source has told Football Insider that Reading are keen to add Carroll to their squad and are hopeful of reaching an agreement by Tuesday night’s deadline.
He could join the recent signings of Scott Dann on a free and Danny Drinkwater on loan from Chelsea.
Carroll left St James’ Park this summer after a two-year spell back at his boyhood club.
He initially left Newcastle in 2011 to join Liverpool after the club’s sale of Fernando Torres.

His return was warmly received by supporters but he only scored one goal on his return.
This came last season as a late consolation in a 3-1 home loss to Leicester City.
Despite not scoring in his first season back at the club, Carroll was a valuable asset to Steve Bruce.
He picked up four assists in 19 appearances that season with most of those outings coming off the bench.
Reading have let four forwards leave the club this summer.
Sone Aluko, Sam Smith and Sam Baldock all left the club on free transfers while Marc McNulty left on loan.
Carroll does have an impressive record in the Championship with 18 goals and 13 assists to his name over 50 outings.
These came mainly for Newcastle and during a spell with Preston back in the 2007-08 season.
