Sources: Rotherham United agree deal for Sunderland star Bailey Wright
Sunderland defender Bailey Wright is set to join Championship rivals Rotherham United on loan, sources have told Football Insider.
Sunderland are happy to let Australian international Wright go out on loan to Rotherham after bringing in defender Joe Anderson earlier this week.
Wright, 30, who was part of Australia’s squad at the recent World Cup finals in Qatar, has struggled to nail down a regular spot in Tony Mowbray’s starting XI this season.
The experienced centre-back has made 14 Championship appearances for the Black Cats this season but completed just six full 90-minute matches.
Wright has captained Sunderland on three occasions this season, but primarily his role at the Stadium of Light has been as a substitute.
He played a crucial role in Sunderland’s promotion season in 2021/22, making 37 appearances as he helped the club return to the second tier.
But opportunities have been harder to come by this season, with Luke O’Nien, Danny Batth and Daniel Ballard pushing him further down the pecking order.
Prior to his time at Sunderland, Wright spent three seasons with Bristol City between 2017 and 2020, making 72 league appearances for the side as a regular starter.
But his longest stint at a club came at Preston after he graduated from their academy in 2010.
Wright spent seven seasons at Deepdale, where he made over 175 senior appearances and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2012/13 season.
In other news, Bristol City are in advanced talks with Luton Town over the signing of Harry Cornick
