Sources: Sheffield United plot move to sign Middlesbrough star Browne

Sheffield United are plotting a move to sign Middlesbrough attacker Marcus Browne this month, Football Insider understands.

The former West Ham man is back to fitness after recovering from an ACL knee injury last January and Boro could opt to let him go in the current window.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Sheffield United are monitoring the 24-year-old’s situation at Middlesbrough.

Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom is looking to add to his side’s attacking options for the second half of the campaign.

Football Insider revealed last year (29 November) that Middlesbrough plan to green light an exit for Browne in this month’s transfer window.

The midfielder is well down the pecking order at the Riverside Stadium and is yet to feature this season.

Browne suffered a crushing blow last season when he injured his anterior cruciate ligament in an FA Cup third-round defeat against Brentford in January 2021.

The Englishman is out of contract at Middlesbrough at the end of next season.

The former Oxford loanee has netted two goals in 22 games for Boro since joining the Teesside club in 2019.

Browne came through the ranks at West Ham but made just one senior appearance for the Irons.

Sheffield United are languishing in mid-table following their relegation to the Championship last season.

However, the Blades have won four out of their last five league games as they look to mount a play-off charge in the second half of the season.

Heckingbottom took the reins at Bramall Lane in November following the sacking of Slavisa Jokanovic.
