Sources: Southampton close to £10m-plus Armstrong deal after breakthrough

Southampton are confident of fending off Premier League rivals to sign Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong for £10million, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Multiple top-flight sides including Everton, West Ham and Norwich City have been interested in the forward, 24, after his goal-drenched 2020-21 campaign.

A Southampton source has told Football Insider that the club have climbed into pole position to land Armstrong following a breakthrough in talks.

The front man is understood to be keen to swap Ewood Park for St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton are expected to pay just over £10million to capture Armstrong in the current window.

That will be a blow to his many suitors, with Norwich also pushing hard for a deal in recent weeks.

As revealed by Football Insider on April 6th, Everton are among the top-flight clubs keen on the hitman after his fine 2020/21 campaign.

Blackburn are being forced to cash in on Armstrong as he is out of contract next year and could leave on a free.

The former England under-21 international scored 28 goals in 40 Championship appearances for Rovers last season.

His performances saw him beat the likes of Ivan Toney, Teemu Pukki and Emi Buendia to the PFA Fans Player of the Year award.

Southampton are in the market for a new centre-forward to compete with Danny Ings, Che Adams and Michael Obafemi.

There are doubts over the future of Ings, who is out of contract in the summer of 2022.
