Sources: Southampton set sights on new Davies raid after Everton talks update
Southampton have reignited their interest in Everton midfielder Tom Davies after failing to lure him last year, Football Insider understands.
The Goodison academy product is a big fans favourite after graduating from the youth team to establish himself in the senior side.
But he started less than half of Everton’s Premier League matches in the just-completed campaign and that has interested Southampton once again.
A Saints source has told Football Insider they will make a move for the 22-year-old if they are given any encouragement by Everton.
Intriguingly, Davies is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and talks over an extension are yet to begin.
Southampton have already signed one player from Everton this summer after agreeing to convert Theo Walcott’s loan into a permanent transfer.
Newcastle have also been linked with Davies but cash is tight at St James’ Park and Steve Bruce has been told he has a transfer kitty of just £8-10million this summer.
A loan deal is the best Newcastle could hope for, although Everton are unlikely to countenance that.
Carlo Ancelotti has spoken warmly of Davies and said he is the player at Everton who most resembles his own style during his Roma and AC Milan days.
The manager’s assistant and son Davide Ancelotti rated the West Derby-born player as the most improved member of the squad since he arrived in late 2019.
Davies made 17 Premier League starts among 30 appearances in all competitions this season.
But the likes of Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure were preferred by Ancelotti when all the central midfielders were fit.
