Sources: Sunderland close to agreeing new contract with O’Nien after talks
Sunderland are confident of agreeing a new contract with Luke O’Nien, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The League One giants have made it a priority to keep hold of the versatile 26-year-old amid strong interest from EFL rivals.
A Black Cats source has told Football Insider that the club are close to agreeing an extended deal with O’Nien following talks this week.
There is hope a new contract can be signed before the club return for pre-season.
O’Nien‘s current agreement is set to expire at the end of this month.
He is one of four players who the club are trying to tie down to a new deal.

Denver Hume, Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke have also held talks with Sunderland chiefs regarding new contracts with the latter the least likely to stay.
As revealed by Football Insider on 28 May, Sunderland expect 30-goal striker Wyke to leave on a free transfer this summer with Celtic in the race for his signature.
O’Nien was one of Sunderland’s standout performers in the 2020-21 campaign.
He made 44 appearances across all competitions last season as Lee Johnson’s side narrowly missed out on promotion through the play-offs.
Football Insider revealed on 26 May that the utility man’s form had attracted the interest of Luton Town, Millwall, Middlesbrough and Preston.
However, it looks increasingly likely that O’Nien will snub the opportunity to join a Championship club in favour of staying at the Stadium of Light.
