Sources: Sunderland in advanced talks to sign Cirkin from Tottenham

Sunderland are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham defender Dennis Cirkin, Football Insider has learned.

The left-back is yet to feature for the Spurs first-team but has been named on the bench on multiple occasions.

An industry source has told Football Insider the two clubs are in negotiations over a permanent deal.

Cirkin first made the Tottenham bench as a 17-year-old shortly after signing his first professional contract.

The England Under-19 international has been named on the bench in five games across all competitions, including in last season’s Europa League.

Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho described him in November 2019, via, as a player with “a lot of quality”.

The 19-year-old has been a regular for the club’s Under-23s side and played 14 times last season.

Sunderland could offer him the perfect opportunity for him to take the next step in his career.

The north-east giants are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Academy graduate Denver Hume is Lee Johnson’s only option at left-back ahead of the new campaign.

Callum McFadzean left the club at the end of last season and has joined League One rivals Crewe Alexandra.

The Black Cats begin their League One campaign against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Last season’s top goalscorer Charlie Wyke will be lining up for the Latics after he rejected the chance to extend his stay at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will be hoping to go one better than last season when they were beaten in the League One play-off final.

In other news, Tottenham are submitting a £17million bid for a 22-year-old with personal terms already agreed.
