Sunderland have made an enquiry for Oxford United midfielder Alex Gorrin with a view to a free transfer, Football Insider understands.

The 28-year-old is out of contract next month and could leave the Kassam Stadium as a free agent if he is unable to agree a new deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Sunderland have made contact over signing Gorrin this summer.

A number of other clubs are also keeping tabs on the centre-midfielder's situation.

Oxford are desperate to keep Gorrin and are offering him a new contract in a bid to persuade him to stay.

Gorrin has been limited to just 17 appearances across all competitions this season because of injury.

The Spanish midfielder tore his anterior cruciate ligament in an FA Cup tie against Bristol Rovers in November and the injury has kept him sidelined since.

Gorrin joined the U's from Motherwell in the summer of 2019 on a free transfer.

In total, he has made 101 appearances for Karl Robinson's side.

Gorrin is no stranger to Sunderland having spent several years in the club's youth system as a teenager before his release in 2014.

The Black Cats could be plying their trade in the Championship next season if they can over Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final on Saturday.

Alex Neil currently has Corry Evans, Luke O'Nien, Carl Winchester, Dan Neil, Jay Matete and Elliott Embleton as central midfield options.
