Swansea City have made an approach for MK Dons boss Russell Martin, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club have stepped up their hunt for a new boss as the new season edges closer.

An industry source has told Football Insider the Swans have now made contact with MK Dons over the 35-year-old.

They would have to pay a compensation fee to the League One outfit as Martin still has one year left on his contract.

The Athletic reported on 26 July they had made contact with Jody Morris and Martin was also being considered.

A move for Morris would be less complicated as he is currently out of work after leaving Chelsea following Frank Lampard's sacking in January.

But they have now firmed up their interest in the ex-Scotland international who has been in charge of the Dons for almost two years.

Cooper left the Welsh outfit by mutual consent earlier this month after missing out on the Crystal Palace job.

He guided the club to a Championship play-off semi-final and final in his two seasons in charge.

Martin has built a good reputation at MK Dons where his side play an impressive brand of football.

They finished last season in 13th-place in League One, nine points below the play-off positions.
