Sources: Swindon Town and Exeter City race to sign Torquay striker Whitfield

Swindon Town and Exeter City lead the race to sign Torquay United striker Ben Whitfield, Football Insider can reveal.

The prolific forward, 25, is available on a summer free transfer after failing to agree a new Torquay deal.

A source has told Football Insider that has led to a stampede of interest from EFL clubs, with Swindon and Exeter leading the chase for Whitfield.

Whitfield has scored six goals in 28 games across all competitions for Torquay this term.

They finished the season in second place in the National League and earned a place in the play-off final with a victory over Notts County at the weekend.

Lee Johnson’s side will face Hartlepool United in the final at Ashton Gate this Sunday (20 June).

However, Whitfield could be playing in League Two with a new side next term after catching the eye with his performances this term.

He has previous experience in the EFL with Port Vale and Yeovil Town.

The Englishman has 10 goals and nine assists in 101 League Two appearances in spells with Vale and Yeovil.

In the National League, he has found the net 16 times and provided eight assists in 84 games.

Swindon Town suffered relegation from League One and will begin the 2021-22 campaign under new manager John McGreal.

Exeter finished the recently completed campaign in ninth place, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs by just three points.

In other news, a goal machine is “very keen” to join Liverpool after contact made and £17million will seal the deal.
