Sources: Three Newcastle stars tell Staveley to appoint ‘miracle-worker’ after Howe talks last night

Newcastle United stars have told the board to appoint Eddie Howe as the new manager, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

This site revealed yesterday lunchtime that the 43-year-old is in advanced talks to take over after talks with Unai Emery collapsed.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the board’s new preferred candidate has full dressing room backing.

Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie and Ryan Fraser, who were all managed by Howe at Bournemouth, have given ringing endorsements of the manager’s credentials to the Amanda Staveley-led board.

Further talks took place with Howe last night over taking over at Newcastle, with the aim of securing a full agreement.

This comes after Staveley and the other club chiefs felt they had agreed terms with Emery.

The Villarreal manager released a statement on Wednesday confirming he would be staying with the club.

Howe has been out of the job since leaving Bournemouth on 1 August 2020.

He was heavily linked with the Celtic job last summer but in a statement, the club confirmed he would not be joining for reasons “outwith both his and Celtic’s control”.

Speaking to TalkSPORT in April, Carlton Cole hailed the “miracles” Howe created at Bournemouth and backed him to succeed at Celtic.

Howe took Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League and was named as the Football League Manager of the Decade for his efforts.

He also led the Cherries to a top-half finish during his second season in the top flight.

Newcastle remain winless this season and travel to Brighton on Saturday evening.

As it stands, they are six points adrift of safety with 28 games still to play.
