Sources: Tottenham line up Hincapie summer raid as Conte plan revealed

Tottenham are plotting a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, Football Insider understands.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte was keen to bring in a new central defender in last month’s window, but the club were unable to agree a deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that strengthening at central defence remains a major priority for Conte for next season and Ecuador star Hincapie figures highly on Spurs’ wanted list.

However, Spurs will face a battle for the defender – with the likes of AC Milan, Roma, Napoli, Sevilla and Zenit all interested.

The 20-year-old has established himself as one of the best young defenders in world football after impressing for club and country in the last 12 months.

Hincapie starred at last summer’s Copa America with Ecuador before joining Bayer Leverkusen last August from Argentinian top-flight club CA Talleres.

The left-footed central defender has caught the eye for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and Europa League this season as well as helping Ecuador to third spot in South American qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.

Hincapie has made 16 league appearances this season for a Leverkusen side who sit third in Germany’s top flight.

The 20-year-old’s contract expires in June 2026.

Tottenham boss Conte is currently persisting with a back three of Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, and Davinson Sanchez – with impressive defender Eric Dier currently sidelined.

Spurs have slumped to three straight Premier League defeats against Chelsea, Southampton, and Wolves.

The north London side had previously been undefeated in the nine league games since Conte’s arrival.

Tottenham sit eighth in the Premier League but could leapfrog fourth-place West Ham if they can win their two games in hand.
