Sources: Tottenham line up Rodgers move 11 years after he was Levy’s ‘preferred choice’

Tottenham are set to sound out Brendan Rodgers following his Leicester City sacking, sources have told Football Insider.

The Londoners are carrying out an exhaustive managerial process as they look to secure a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte.

Julian Nagelsmann is Spurs’ top target to take over in the summer but there are growing whispers he has his eye on a club better placed for instant success.

The sudden availability of the Chelsea job threatens to throw a major spanner in the works for Tottenham’s hopes of luring the 35-year-old German.

Rodgers, 50, is one manager that definitely interests Spurs and the club will contact him as they sound out many potential candidates in the coming weeks.

Intriguingly, the just-departed Leicester boss has been admired for a long time by chairman Daniel Levy, stretching back to his Swansea City days a decade ago.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider how Rodgers was Levy’s “preferred choice” to replace Harry Redknapp shortly before he was sacked in June 2012.

The longstanding Spurs supremo held talks via third parties to assess the northern Irishman’s interest in the post towards the end of Redknapp’s final season.

Rodgers was very keen on the job but Liverpool made a formal approach first and he was unveiled as their manager on 1 June that year following the departure of Kenny Dalglish.

Redknapp was dismissed a fortnight later by Tottenham.

Rodgers is seen as much more viable for Spurs now there is no longer the need to pay Leicester a huge compensation sum to lure him.

Conte’s former assistant Cristian Stellini has been placed in caretaker charge for the remainder of the season with Ryan Mason as his number two.

Stellini has a job on his hands to secure a top for finish for the Lilywhites.

The London club are currently fifth in the Premier League and although only one point behind a Champions League spot, fourth placed Man United have a game in hand on their competitors.
