Tottenham have made contact with RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann after making him their number one choice to replace Jose Mourinho, Football Insider understands.
The north Londoners have begun their search for a new manager after sacking Mourinho on Monday.
A Spurs source has told Football Insider the club have already made contact via third parties with Nagelsmann and are keen to ascertain his interest in the vacant post.
Further talks are likely to take place if the 33-year-old indicates he is keen to manage in the Premier League.
Tottenham are hopeful they can steal a march on Nagelsmann’s other suitors including Bayern Munich.
The current Champions League holders are also keen on the Leipzig manager as they shortlist candidates to replace Hansi Flick, who is leaving at the end of the season.
Former Hoffenheim manager Nagelsmann has a contract with Leipzig that runs until 2023.
But that has not stopped Tottenham lining up a move for the man chairman Daniel Levy and the board have made their preferred candidate to replace Mourinho.
Other potential contenders include Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
Ryan Mason, 29, has been put in temporary charge and will be assisted by experienced duo Chris Powell, 51, and Nigel Gibbs, 55, who have been named assistant interim head coaches.
Tottenham confirmed on Tuesday morning that Mason will be boss for the six remaining Premier League matches of the season and Sunday’s League Cup Final against Manchester City.
That offers the chance to end Spurs’ 13-year trophy drought.
