Tottenham are keeping tabs on Villarreal star Pau Torres ahead of the summer, Football Insider understands.

The centre-back, 25, was the subject of strong interest from the north Londoners last summer before he opted to stay at the Spanish outfit.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Torres is once again on the radar of Spurs as they look to recruit a top-class central defender.

He is also wanted by other Premier League clubs as they gear up for a battle to prise him from Spain.

Torres is valued at more than £50m by Villarreal and has one huge admirer in Antonio Conte.

He believes the Spain international is one of the finest centre-backs in Europe.

The former Malaga loanee is out of contract in 2024.

The centre-back was an integral part of the Yellow Submarine side that lifted the Europa League last term after a famous shoot-out win over Man United.

Torres has also impressed in this season's Champions League.

Villarreal have reached the competition's quarter-finals after beating Juventus across two legs.

Torres has played 36 games in all competitions this season, netting five goals.

However, Villarreal sit seventh in La Liga - nine points adrift of the Champions League places.

Meanwhile, Tottenham sit just three points away from the Premier League's top four after recording a 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday (20 March).

Conte has implemented his favoured 3-4-2-1 system at Spurs, with Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, and Ben Davies currently first choice at the heart of the defence.

The Italian is looking to bolster his defensive options in the summer window after being denied major additions in January.
