Tottenham have made the signing of a super-quick defender a top summer priority, Football Insider has learned.

Spurs have long identified a new senior central centre-back as a key recruitment plank of the next transfer window.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the profile the club's recruitment team are searching for is a commanding centre-back blessed with "genuine pace" and capable of slotting straight into their starting XI next season.

One issue for the Londoners is they will not have a big transfer kitty to work with unless they sell one of their prize assets such as Harry Kane or Son Heung-Min.

Toby Alderweireld, who turned 32 last month, Eric Dier and 2020 signing Joe Rodon are also in the ranks but none have the right profile.

Spurs are not expecting their search to be an easy one, and the club have not yet finalised a shortlist of targets despite a recruitment meeting last week.

Tottenham have struggled for defensive security this season even though their record of 41 goals conceded from 35 Premier League matches is less than Leicester City and West Ham, who are fourth and fifth in the table.

Alderweireld and Dier have been the preferred partnership of interim manager Ryan Mason but it was a combination that looked well off the pace in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

There is an acceptance at the club that the club's problems can only be solved in the transfer market, rather than on the coaching ground.
