Sources: West Ham fear Tottenham as Lingard race takes new twist

West Ham fear Tottenham could blow them out of the water in the Jesse Lingard transfer race, Football Insider understands.

The Irons are keen to convert the Man United star’s 2020-21 loan into a permanent deal this summer.

But a Lingard’s future remains unresolved and a West Ham source has told Football Insider that Spurs are regarded as a big rival for his signature.

The club have made plain their interest in Lingard but the word at the London Stadium is they need to “watch out for Tottenham” in the race.

Other Premier League clubs are also interested, including big-spending Aston Villa.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (10 July) that Nuno Espirito Santo is a big admirer of the attacking midfielder, who is one of two United stars he wants as part of a potential £100million-plus-players Harry Kane exchange deal.

United are willing to bide their time on letting their academy product go and he has returned for pre-season.

Man United triggered a 12-month extension in Lingard’s contract in December before he joined West Ham for the second half of the 2020-21 campaign.

That move reignited the career of the England international and he is now a player in great demand.

The end of the Euros will crank up the transfer frenzy further, with the likes of Spurs and West Ham ready to seal their first summer signings.

An auction for Lingard would no doubt suit United as it could increase the price for a player who was previously surplus to requirements.
