Sources: West Ham set sights on beating Everton to Leigh signing after deal agreed

West Ham have set their sights on Preston North End sensation Lewis Leigh, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder, 17, has caught the eye of Premier League clubs with his performances for the Championship club’s age-group teams.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider the club’s talent spotters have seen Leigh in action this season and have been hugely impressed.

They are set to keep further tabs on time over the coming months and he is regarded as a target capable of developing into a Premier League player.

But there is strong interest in the young central midfielder from other top-flight teams.

Everton are among those who are also monitoring the situation of Leigh.

Preston secured Leigh to a professional contract last month, which runs until the summer of 2024.

The second-tier outfit have a clear plan for developing the teenager, who is a boyhood North End fan and watched from the terraces before joining their academy at the age of 14.

Leigh had previously been on the books of Liverpool but was released after failing to make the grade.

The youngster has yet to make his first-team debut for Preston but he made the bench for a Championship match last season.

Leigh was also promoted to train with the senior squad since they returned for pre-season in July.
