Wigan Athletic are poised to sign Aston Villa academy product Corey Blackett-Taylor on a free transfer, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The winger is a free agent after his contract at Tranmere Rovers expired earlier this week.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wigan have made a move for Blackett-Taylor and are now in advanced talks to sign him.

Blackett-Taylor joined Aston Villa as an 11-year-old and rose through the ranks to make two appearances for the senior side.

He left the club in 2019 to join Tranmere Rovers after spending the previous season on loan with Walsall in League One.

Tranmere suffered relegation from the third tier in his first season at the club and reached the League Two play-offs last term.

The 23-year-old ended his association with the Wirrall club with eight goals and eight assists in 62 games across all competitions.

Wigan avoided relegation from League One last season.

Leam Richardson was named as the permanent manager with three games remaining after an impressive spell in temporary charge.

The Latics have already had a productive summer with the additions of Max Power, Ben Amos, Jordan Cousins, Gwion Edwards, Tom Naylor and Jack Whatmough.

They will be hoping Blackett-Taylor will bring goals and assists after losing young star striker Kyle Joseph to Swansea City.

Blackett-Taylor has scored twice and provided two assists in 34 games, including 18 starts, at League One level.
