Sources: Wigan Athletic lead Rangers and Sunderland in race to sign Josh Stones
Wigan Athletic are leading the race ahead of Rangers to land Guiseley starlet Josh Stones, Football Insider understands.
Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Glasgow giants Rangers have expressed an interest in the 18-year-old, who is part of the England schoolboy set-up.
But a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wigan are in pole position to sign Stones and are favourites to agree deal.
The teenager is believed to have impressed during a training stint at the League One outfit earlier this month.
They are now keen to offer him a deal and lure him from the sixth tier of English football.
On 27 October, Guiseley announced Stones had signed first team forms following an impressive start to the season.
Before agreeing terms, he had bagged nine goals in five appearances for the club’s youth side.
He has now made 15 appearances for the senior side, scoring once.
Stones has usually been used off the bench but has completed 90 minutes in the National League North twice.
He also made the bench for his side’s FA Cup first-round clash against AFC Wimbledon on 6 November but failed to make it onto the pitch.
Stones is currently away with England Under 18 schoolboys and could play when they face Northern Ireland’s Under 18s later today (25 March).
Wigan Athletic are currently second in League One, three points ahead of third-placed MK Dons with two games in hand.
Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership, three points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic.
In other news, Rangers will listen to offers for 25-year-old international this summer after decision made.
