Sources: Wijnaldum transfer from Liverpool is '95% done'

Barcelona are confident of signing Georginio Wijnaldum when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season, Football Insider has been told.

The midfielder, 30, was vague about his future earlier this week and said there was “no news” on where he will be playing next term.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Barcelona are working in the background on luring Wijnaldum and went as far as to say the deal is “95 per cent done”.

The Holland international has been offered a contract by the Spanish giants and a move there is said to have been “his dream transfer” since boyhood.

A report in Spain on Friday suggested Barcelona have cooled their interest in Wijnaldum due to the emergence of teenager Ilaix Moriba.

But Football Insider has been told the club’s manager Ronald Koeman has made the Liverpool number five one of his top targets this summer.

He is a huge admirer of his countryman and Wijnaldum’s free agent status from this summer makes it an additionally attractive deal for the club amid some major financial issues.

Football Insider revealed last November that Liverpool were to try again in the new year to revive discussions with Wijnaldum and his agent Humphrey Nijman.

But negotiations are still at a deadlock and there is a growing sense he will leave in the summer.

Wijnaldum has remained a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s side, starting 26 of their 28 Premier League matches this season and Wednesday’s win over RB Leipzig was his sixth Champions League game of the campaign.

He has made 224 appearances for the club in five years, scoring 22 goals and supplying 16 assists.

In other news, £50m Liverpool target from last year is planning to quit his club this summer after big developments.
