Wolves are in advanced talks to sign Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands club are closing in on the capture of the anchorman, 21, as they negotiate a fee for the Brazilian with his club.

Negotiations are progressing well and Wolves are hopeful of agreeing a £15million deal ahead of the weekend.

Gomes has been granted permission to discuss personal terms with the Premier League strugglers, who are spending big in January to escape relegation.

Newcastle have also been tracking Gomes, who is regarded as one of the best emerging midfield anchormen talents in his homeland.

The youngster racked up 63 appearances across all competitions last season, registering two goals, two assists, and 19 yellow cards.

He has already won the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil during his fledgling career, and was named in the Brazillian top-flight's Team of the Year for last season.

Gomes was not part of the Flamengo squad which kicked off the new campaign with a 1-0 win over Audax-RJ in the Regional Championship on Thursday night (12 January).

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is currently relying on a midfield three of Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes, and Joao Moutinho.

The Midlands club lack depth beyond that starting three - with Irish youngster Joe Hodge often featuring from the bench.

21-year-old midfielder Boubacar Traore has featured sparingly since joining from Ligue 2 Metz last summer.

Wolves

Wolves sit 19th in the Premier League ahead of the weekend's action.

Lopetegui's side face fellow strugglers West Ham with the opportunity to climb as high as 15th if results elsewhere go their way.
