Sources: Wolves submit bid for Tottenham star Doherty as talks held today

Wolves have submitted a bid for Tottenham defender Matt Doherty as they look to re-sign him this month, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The right-back, 29, has struggled for game time at Spurs this season and failed to start a single Premier League match.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wolves are very keen to secure the return of the player they sold to the London giants in the summer of 2020.

The two clubs are set to hold talks over a potential permanent deal or a loan with an obligation to buy.

Spurs are willing to listen to offers for Doherty after he slipped down the pecking order this term.

Summer signing Emerson Royal has emerged as the first choice right wing-back in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 set-up.

Doherty has 594 minutes of first-team action this season but none of his six starts among 10 appearances have come in the Premier League.

He joined 18 months ago in a £16million deal but struggled to live up to expectations.

Doherty played the best football of his career at Wolves and was their third top scorer with seven goals in 2019-20 as well as supplying five assists.

He has not reached those heights at Spurs, with his 39 matches yielding four assists and no goals so far.

Wolves want Doherty to provide competition for Nelson Semedo, who was signed in September 2020 to replace the Irishman when he signed for Tottenham.
