Sources: Southampton set to beat Leeds to Perraud signing after breakthrough

Southampton are closing in on the signing of Stade Brest defender Romain Perraud after leapfrogging Leeds United in the race, Football Insider has learned.

Leeds had been strongly linked with the left-back, 23, for months until the Saints recently climbed into pole position.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Southampton are making progress on their pursuit of Perraud and there is a growing confidence a deal can be agreed following a breakthrough in talks.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have offered a contract to the left-back that he has indicated will be accepted.

The Saints have also held extensive talks with Stade Brest over a fee and the structure of payments.

It is likely that £12million will be enough to land Perraud.

Leeds have turned their attention to signing an alternative left-back, with Barcelona’s Junior Firpo their top target.

For Southampton, a new left-sided defender is also a priority as they look to replace Ryan Bertrand.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that the former England international is expected to join Leicester City in a deal that could be finalised this week.

Southampton could now sign their second player from Stade Brest in consecutive summers.

The Saints landed Ibrahima Diallo from the Ligue 1 minnows in the summer window of last year.

Perraud shone in 2020-21 during 36 league appearances for a Stade Brest side that narrowly avoided relegation, with three goals and an eyecatching seven assists from defence.

He is under contract at the French club until the summer of 2025 after signing a two-year contract extension in January.
