Kieran Maguire: Southampton shirt sales to soar as deal struck - 'fans will be very keen on this'

The Southampton training kit deal with EcoWatt will likely lead to an uptick in shirt sales as it gives fans who do not want to buy the crypto-sponsored home shirt an alternative.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Saints’ new deal with EcoWatt.

The club announced on Thursday (3 November) that EcoWatt have become their new training kit partner for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign.

The south coast club’s primary front-of-shirt partner is Sportsbet.io, an online cryptocurrency-based betting platform.

Many supporters are now railing against gambling sponsorship in football, and fewer clubs are choosing to get into bed with what many analysts suggest are ethically dubious companies.

Maguire forecasts that Southampton’s new deal with EcoWatt will allow this contingent of the St Mary’s faithful to continue to support buy club merchandise.

“As far as the training kit deal with the green energy firm is concerned, it will help the club in terms of trying to broaden its appeal to different elements within the fan group,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“They might not be so keen to carry on the tradition of buying the homes shirts which are sponsored by an online crypto company.

Therefore, by broadening the sponsor base, it will allow fans, if they so desire, to buy a replica training kit.

“This way, it can act as a substitute for those who would rather not have the traditional home kit with a crypto sponsor but are keen to have some merchandise.”
