Sheffield United have won the race to sign Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz after agreeing a deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old is due to undergo a medical at Bramall Lane on Friday before putting the finishing touches to complete his move, despite late interest from rival clubs.

Derby County and Stoke City were also in for the Chile forward, but the Blades have beaten their rivals to agree a deal with Southampton.

Brereton Diaz made 41 appearances on loan at Derby last season, where he scored eight goals and provided three assists in all competitions, and his availability placed clubs on alert.

Despite interest from elsewhere, though, he has now opted to return to Sheffield United, where he spent two previous loan spells in 2024 and 2025.

Southampton opened the door for his exit this summer, despite his current contract being set to run until 2028, and have now given him permission to undergo a medical.

Why are Sheffield United signing Ben Brereton Diaz?

Football Insider excluisvely revealed on 25 August that Southampton have been keen to sell Brereton Diaz permanently, after fielding an enquiry about his availability from Derby.

Despite Derby's interest in bringing him back for a second loan spell, though, Sheffield United have beaten their rivals to the punch with a deal now agreed.

He is expected to pass his medical without complications after featuring twice for Southampton this season, although he has been left out of their last two games.

Chris Wilder has been keen to reunite with the forward, with whom he enjoys a strong relationship, as he aims to bolster his squad in the closing stages of the window.

This comes following the Blades' struggles in front of goal this season, as they have yet to find the net in two Championship games, both of which have ended in 0-0 draws.

During his two previous spells at Bramall Lane, Brereton Diaz has scored ten goals and provided four assists in 34 appearances, and he is now keen to replicate that success.

Which other positions are Sheffield United targeting?

Sheffield United are prioritising the addition of a new striker in the coming days, with Brereton Diaz emerging as their top target in the position and that move set to be completed.

As a result, they will shift their attention to other key areas of the squad, with the addition of a new centre-back also on their radar in the window's closing stages.

This comes after Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Sheffield United had sumbitted multiple offers to sign Leicester City defender Harry Souttar.

No deal has been agreed for the Australia international, however, and that deal looks unlikely to go through, meaning the position is still in need of strengthening.

Wilder and his recruitment team are now aiming for a busy end to the transfer window, with clear improvements to the squad needed.
