Revealed: SPFL set for U-turn as Rangers apply relentless pressure behind scenes

SPFL chiefs are on the brink of caving in and handing out loans to cash-strapped Scottish clubs amid relentless pressure from Rangers, Football Insider understands.

Extensive talks behind the scenes over the Easter weekend amid a public war of words between league bosses and the Ibrox giants could result in a U-turn from the SPFL board.

A Scottish source has told Football Insider that the governing body is increasingly open to a new range of emergency measures after their plan to declare the season over stalled amid Friday evening’s dramatic vote.

Despite winning the backing of 85 per cent of Scotland’s 42 senior clubs, uncertainty over Dundee’s position has blocked proposals to end the current campaign and allow £9.3m of prize money to be distributed to cash-strapped clubs.

Rangers have gone to war with the SPFL amid anger at how their counter proposal for the prize money to be distributed via interest-free loans has been blocked.

They have called for the suspension of chief executive Neil Doncaster and legal adviser Rod McKenzie, as well as a full independent inquiry into Friday’s shambolic vote.

The Ibrox club claims to be in possession of proof of serious foul play the at the very top of the game.

But that provoked a stinging rebuke from SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan who wrote to all 42 clubs yesterday in an attempt to “set the record straight”.

Nevertheless, the SPFL may now be forced into a U-turn as they take fresh legal advice on unlocking the prize money and depositing it with all 42 clubs without declaring the season over.

That would avoid the need to crown champions in every division enforcing relegation.

Rangers are desperate to avoid a situation in which the season is called based on the current top 12 league standings and Celtic are declared champions.

The Ibrox club will even consider legal action if the season is ended and their bitter rivals extend their title run to a record-equalling nine-in-a-row.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on a centre-forward who has blown ex-England striker away on Netflix.
