Spurs Exclusive: Paul Robinson 'Amazed' at two things Mourinho did today

Paul Robinson was “very surprised” that Jose Mourinho did not select Toby Aldeweireld and Jan Vertonghen for Tottenham as they lost to Wolves on Sunday.

The former White Hart Lane goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the centre-halfs are the best defenders in the current Spurs squad.

Aldeweireld, 30, and Vertonghen, 32, were both unused substitutes as the Lilywhites lost 3-2 at home having led twice in the game.

Mourinho opted for a back-three of Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga at the Tottenham Stadium in what was a change of shape and personnel.

However, they ultimately failed to deal with the in-form trio of Adama Traore, Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez, the latter two on the scoresheet for the visitors.

When asked for his assessment of Mourinho’s team selection, Robinson told Football Insider: “I was very surprised. Very surprised.

“Jose seems to favour Eric Dier whether it be holding midfield or a back three. Dier and Tanganga are inexperienced and Eric Dier is not a regular defender. I was amazed he left the experience and quality of Vertonghen and Alderweireld on the bench.

“They are Spurs’ best two central defenders in my opinion. If you put Sanchez next to Vertonghen and Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Alderweireld are the best defenders.

“It was a very surprising selection in a very surprising formation for Jose as well.”

Spurs led through Steven Bergwijn and then again through Serge Aurier but goals from Matt Doherty, Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez sealed a 3-2 win for the visitors.

The result lifts Wolves above their opponents into sixth place with the North-London side now 5 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
