Noel Whelan suggested Tottenham target Willian may perform a U-turn and sign a new deal at Chelsea.
The former Leeds and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, believes there are still negotiations to be had between the 31-year-old and manager Frank Lampard.
Willian is out of contract on 30 June and is expected to receive a new short-term contract that would see him remain at Stamford Bridge until the completion of the 2019/20 campaign.
Premier League clubs unanimously agreed last week to allow for players’ contracts to be extended, including loan deals, until the end of the season.
Football Insider revealed that the Brazilian is Spurs’ top summer target but Whelan suspects a deal is far from certain.
“Look, a renewal is never ever out of the question,” he told Football Insider.
“You can see U-turns, even at this late stage in a player’s contract when he can go on a free. There is still lots of talking to be done between Frank and Willian.
“At the end of the day, Willian would be a fantastic signing for anybody.
“He has got loads left in the tank. A standout again for Chelsea this season. Fantastic performances this season and he does not seem to have lost any of the pace or skill that he came to Chelsea with.
“On a free contract, he is an absolute snip! I would love him at Leeds but he is settled in London so that is where he will want to be.”
Lampard told Chelsea’s official website: “That (Willian’s contract) is obviously something I’m looking at very carefully.”
Willian has scored seven and assisted six in 37 appearances this season.
