Jack Grealish could sign for Tottenham this summer if Aston Villa fail to get promoted, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds United and Coventry striker, who is a Championship expert, is a big admirer of Grealish and believes he is too good to be playing in the second tier for another season.
The 23-year-old has transformed Villa’s fortunes since returning from a three-month shin injury, with the team winning six consecutive league matches to catapult themselves into play-off contention.
Tottenham tried to sign Grealish last summer, when Villa knocked back their bids, but Whelan is convinced Mauricio Pochettino has not given up on taking him to White Hart Lane.
Asked if the number 10 will stay at Villa beyond this summer’s transfer window, Whelan exclusively told Football Insider: “That’s a good question, once again it all depends on Premier League. If they get promoted, he’ll stay at Villa. If they remain in the Championship, then yeah, I think he’s going to have to look elsewhere, maybe back to Tottenham who have already been sniffing around.
“He’s been loyal enough, he could have gone probably at the end of the (last) season, signed a new contract, but I can’t see how you can hold onto a talent like that if you’re staying in the Championship – someone who’s young, English and he wants to be playing at the top level, testing himself week in, week out.”
Grealish signed a new Villa contract last September that runs until the summer of 2023 but multiple reports have stated it includes a release clause.
Spurs could be in the market for a creative attacking midfielder if Denmark international Christian Eriksen leaves.
