Leeds United may have needed to sell Archie Gray to Tottenham to avoid committing a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach. 

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he was surprised Leeds would have potentially breached the PSR rules for 2023-24 without selling Gray after several players have moved on over the past year.

The West Yorkshire club sold the 18-year-old to Tottenham on 2 July after Football Insider revealed on 30 June the Premier League side were plotting a move to sign him. 

The transfer is believed to be worth around £30million, with Joe Rodon moving in the opposite direction as part of a £10million deal. 

Gray featured heavily for Daniel Farke’s side last season as they just missed out on an immediate return to the Premier League following their play-off final defeat against Southampton. 

Archie Gray sale likely driven by Leeds United PSR concerns

Borson admitted his gut feeling is Leeds needed to complete the big-money sale to comply with the PSR rules and avoid a potential points deduction. 

He told Football Insider: “There is some controversy over when that deal happened and why. 

“There may have been a release clause. My gut feeling is that they needed to sell him. 

“I thought they may be short if they got promoted because the promotion bonuses would kick in and give them a £20million hole in 2023-24.

“I was a bit surprised that, given all the sales they had made, they still would have potentially failed 2023-24 but for that sale.

“But it may be that there was just a release clause.”
