Chelsea are not currently close to agreeing a deal for Qatar Airways to become their new front-of-shirt sponsor after talks have been revealed.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the window is closing for the London giants in their bid to land a lucrative sponsorship deal.

Chelsea have started the new season without a primary shirt sponsor for the second consecutive campaign after their deal with Infinite Athlete expired over the summer.

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol reported on 24 September the west London club are in talks with Qatar Airways and two other airlines about becoming their new front-of-shirt sponsor.

Chelsea shirt sponsorship price could drop significantly

Borson suggested a deal could soon only be worth between £10-15million after Chelsea have so far failed to reach an agreement with any of the interested parties.

“First of all, I’m not sure it’s quite right that they are close,” Borson told Football Insider.

“If you are not close now given that we are about to move into October, the window is closing really for a material front-of-shirt sponsor for the season.

“If they don’t get it in the next couple of weeks, I think it’s going to be very hard for them to generate anywhere near the £40million that they are looking for.

“I think you are starting to get to the position where you are lucky to be getting £10-15million.

“It is interesting that Juventus, who are in the Champions League, do not yet have a front-of-shirt sponsor.

“A deal collapsed at the last minute towards the end of August and they currently don’t have a front-of-shirt sponsor.

“That’s the issue. It’s a big hole in clubs’ profit and loss.

Chelsea

“I just don’t think Chelsea are that close to doing a deal with Qatar for this season.

“I might be proved wrong, but my information is that it’s just not right that they are close to doing a deal.”
