Stephen Kelly told to complete Rangers exit after 'massive' confession - McLeish

Alex McLeish has insisted Stephen Kelly needs to leave Rangers this summer after falling into “limbo” at Ibrox.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 22-year-old’s career has stalled in Glasow after struggling for game time.

As quoted by the Daily Record (11 June), Kelly confessed he is facing a “massive” 12 months as he heads into the final year of his Rangers contract.

He revealed he has had “no indication” over the club’s plans for him and that he is just focusing on pre-season in Glasgow.

McLeish admitted the young midfielder has struggled to usurp more experienced names in the Ibrox pecking order.

He suggested it may be time for Kelly to leave the Gers in order to further his career.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They kind of never really pushed him in Stevie Gerrard’s year. Obviously, he was looking for guys who were experienced. Players who could take them over the line in terms of cup competitions, European competitions, as we’ve seen.

Steven had to go out and get some experience somewhere. Now he’s (Kelly) in a little bit of limbo. Possibly, to progress his career, he’ll have to leave.

“That can happen. What is he, 22 now? It doesn’t look as if he’s going to be able to break into that Rangers team because of the demands at the very highest level of this club.

“As a very good young player, he has to take his career somewhere else.”

Kelly spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Salford City.

He played 21 times for the Ammies, with one goal to his name.
