Steve Cooper hailed by Campbell as Nottingham Forest close in on 'biggest signing of the summer'

Kevin Campbell has claimed a new contract for Steve Cooper would be “the biggest signing” Nottingham Forest could make this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Reds and Arsenal striker heaped praise on Cooper, 42, for his miraculous promotion success last season.

According to The Telegraph‘s John Percy (16 June), Cooper is close to signing a new long-term deal at the City Ground.

The Welsh manager has flown out to Athens for talks with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis regarding transfer plans and his own contract situation.

Cooper has little over a year remaining on his current deal with the newly-promoted side.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Cooper potentially penning a new deal, Campbell said: “It would be the biggest signing they could make this summer.

“The most important for the football club, that is for sure.

“When you consider where the club was and where he took them to, it is remarkable. He took the back into the Premier League after 23 years.

“This is not just about showing Steve Cooper the respect he deserves, it is about getting that plan in place. You have to start planning and building if you are Nottingham Forest.

“Cooper has proven to be a really good manager. I think it is vital that they sign him. It would be great if he puts pen to paper.”
