Steven Gerrard: Liverpool need to add this £50m-rated player to their side

Liverpool great Steven Gerrard has shared that he feels the current side needs Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk to it.
The 25-year-old centre-back has been linked with the Reds alongside a number of other top flight sides after starring for the Saints.
The south coast side are keen to keep hold of the player until the summer at least after the Daily Mail reported that Manchester City were planning a £50million swoop.
But, Gerrard identified the player as a must-buy for the Reds after the now academy coach watched his team fall to a 3-2 defeat at home against Swansea.
“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for van Dijk from Southampton,” Gerrard said on BT Sport, as quoted by the Express.

“But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
Liverpool have long had problems in the defensive areas and were also without usual first choice centre-back Joel Matip for the weekend clash.
Both Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren lined up against the Swans as two goals from Fernando Llorente alongside a Gylfi Sigurdsson effort cancelled out two Roberto Firmino goals.
However, centre-back Van Dijk also suffered a bad weekend despite starring in his side’s 3-0 victory against champions Leicester on Sunday.
The Dutchman was forced off the St Mary’s Stadium pitch after 55 minutes following a late challenge from Jamie Vardy, meaning he could sit out of Wednesday’s clash against Liverpool.
Football Insider verdict:
There is no doubt that Van Dijk would be a very good purchase for Liverpool. However, there is also next to no chance that Southampton would allow their star defender to leave in the January window. A summer deal more be more viable, but that could lead the Reds into a bidding war with some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Liverpool clearly need a new centre-back with both Lovren and Klavan not good enough to feature in a team battling for the title. But, Van Dijk could even be out of their reach and they may have to scour the globe for alternative targets.
