Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has claimed Steven Gerrard is now under pressure at Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said that after underperforming last season Gerrard will be facing pressure to "improve" this season to keep his job.

The Villans suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth in their opening game of the 2022-23 Premier League season.

As quoted by Birmingham Live (6 August), Gerrard said the result was "extremely disappointing".

The manager added that his team "couldn't find the answers in the final third" and accepted blame for their shortcomings.

When asked if Gerrard's position at Villa Park was now under threat, McAvennie told Football Insider's Charlotte Cohen: "Yes, I think he is under pressure.

"He’s brought players in that just haven’t clicked. I think it’s the nature of the game. Gerrard has been in the game long enough to know that if you don’t win games you’re going to be under pressure.

"It’s still way too early for anyone to be talking about him going out the door but I understand why people are saying it. He didn’t do too well at the end of the season but I don’t think he’s going to be having sleepless nights about it.

"They’ve got to improve. They’ve got to be sharper, quicker, they’ve got to do everything better. From what I saw, they were second best to everything."
