Kieran Maguire issues 'huge' Sunderland claim amid historic behind-the-scenes 'leak

The independent regulator “leak” has done a fine job of acknowledging and protecting the investment made by the owners of clubs such as Sunderland to their local communities.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the proposed remit of the independent regulator.

Last Wednesday (1 February), The Sun published what it claims is a leak of the powers of the historic new body, which aims to ensure the financial viability of the English league system and safeguard the interests of supporters.

The regulator, which clubs will pay an annual fee to help fund, will have the power to stop clubs from joining breakaway leagues and address the financial distribution system throughout the pyramid.

A white paper is due to be announced by the Department for Digitial, Culture, Media and Sport shortly.

Maguire saluted DCMS’s efforts, claiming that they go far enough without the risk of discouraging future investment in EFL clubs like Sunderland.

In terms of the regulator leak, the proposals appear measured and proportionate,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

The aim is not to discourage future investment in the domestic game.

Also, it acknowledges the huge investment that has been made historically by existing owners, many of whom encourage their clubs to invest in the local community.

Could the regulator have been more draconian? Yes, it could. But the people who have been involved have certainly been involved in all stakeholders, from fans groups to owners.

That is with a view to protecting the game without making it a less attractive product.
