Sunderland tipped to seal three January signings after admission - Phillips

Kevin Phillips expects Sunderland to sign two or three players in the January transfer window after Lee Johnson’s transfer admission.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said a centre-half and striker will be the two priorities for the recruitment team.

The Black Cats have suffered four straight defeats across all competitions.

As quoted by Sunderland Echo (November 4th), Johnson admitted he “needs help” and “a little more” ahead of the January transfer window.

Phillips is confident funds will be made available in January but insisted they will not be “limitless”.

“From the owner’s point of view, yes, there will be funds made available but it will not be limitless,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “There will be a budget.

“Sunderland are the biggest club in the league but it doesn’t mean they can go out and spend a fortune.

“Lee will have identified the players he wants to bring in and a list will have been given to the owners. Let’s hope those two or three players he wants to bring in can really strengthen the squad and help them push forward.

“In terms of areas, another defender is needed. They have leaked a lot of goals in recent games. Maybe bring in another striker as well because there is a lot of pressure on Ross Stewart right now. The spine of the team is probably where he wants to look at.”
