Oxford United and Wigan Athletic in hot pursuit of Sunderland's Zak Johnson
Oxford United, Wigan Athletic and York City are eyeing moves for Sunderland defender Zak Johnson, sources have told Football Insider.
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with York and played a key role in their National League title success, with the club keen to keep him at the York Community Stadium.
However, they will now face competition from League One clubs looking to offer him the chance to move up the EFL as a result of his impressive performances.
Sunderland are expected to be prepared to let the centre-back leave this summer as he will struggle to break into the starting XI under Regis Le Bris.
Johnson's contract is set to expire at the end of the month, and while he has been listed among the club's retained players, it is still likely he will move on.
Both Oxford United and Wigan will be confident of luring him to League One, but the opportunity to continue his development and progress with York will be appealing.
Could York City beat rivals to sign Zak Johnson?
Sunderland are planning ahead for next season after qualifying for the Europa League, with Le Bris hoping to improve his squad in a number of key positions.
However, despite his form on loan at York last season, Johnson is not expected to play a part in the Black Cats' plans and will be allowed to leave the club.
His likely availability as a free agent has placed a number of EFL sides on alert, with League One duo Oxford United and Wigan currently showing the most interest.
Oxford are aiming to bolster their squad following their relegation from the Championship as they aim to bounce back up, while Wigan hope to build on a mid-table finish.
York, however, are seen among the leading contenders despite residing in the division below their rivals and are determined to keep Johnson at the club long-term.
Which other players could leave York City?
York's plans to keep their best players at the club beyond the summer transfer window are set to go beyond attempting to lure Johnson back to the club.
Football Insider revealed on 27 May that York have rejected an offer for Malachi Fagan-Walcott as they view him as a crucial part of their plans for next season.
Scottish giants Hearts made a £750,000 offer for the centre-back last month, with Derek McInnes keen to strengthen his squad following their second-placed finish.
Hearts could offer the 24-year-old a shot at playing European football next season, which is expected to be tempting, but must first agree a deal with his club.
However, York rebuffed the offer and have no plans to lose their key players as they prepare to make their mark on the EFL after picking up 108 points last season.
