West Ham United are on the brink of Premier League relegation after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Hammers travelled to St James’ Park knowing that victory would lift them out of the relegation zone and place huge pressure on Tottenham to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

But West Ham were 2-0 down after less than 20 minutes, with Nick Woltemade and Will Osula both capitalising on chaotic defending.

Nuno Espirito Santo looked to his bench to change things, but Osula scored again to render Taty Castellanos’ wonder goal just four minutes later a consolation.

West Ham’s terrible run of form has come at the worst possible time, with their fate now in the lap of the Gods.

Supercomputer predicts chance of West Ham safety

Football Insider exclusively revealed in January that West Ham have no intention of selling Mateus Fernandes this summer, but they will have little choice if they are relegated.

And the same can be said of several key names, including Jarred Bowen, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Such sales would be necessary in light of the decimation to the club’s finances that would occur if they are relegated to the Premier League.

West Ham would take hits on every single level possible, and the likes of Luton Town, Leicester City and Sunderland have learned that the way out is not always clear.

Nevertheless, it is a reality that the Irons are going to have to start getting used to, with a miracle now required to keep them in the Premier League.

The London club will need favours of both Chelsea and Everton, with their relegation to be confirmed if Tottenham beat either side. Even a draw likely condemns the Hammers, considering the chasm in goal difference.

Opta‘s supercomputer has handed West Ham a minuscule 6.17 per cent chance of surviving the drop, while the Lilywhites carry a 93.83 per cent chance of survival.

Reasons to hope for West Ham

The situation looks incredibly bleak for West Ham, and it certainly is. Tottenham need to secure just a point to all but confirm their safety in the Premier League.

But the Hammers will hope to at least take the fight to the final day, with the Lilywhites’ success certainly not guaranteed.

Tottenham have won one game at Stamford Bridge in 36 years, and will face a Chelsea side buoyed by the upcoming appointment of Xabi Alonso.

And there is far from any guarantee that the final day is a simple task for Roberto De Zerbi. His side have just two home wins from 18 league games this season, while Everton have one of the strongest away records in the Premier League.

At this stage, West Ham will be doing their job if they place as much pressure as they can on Tottenham, with their fate largely out of their hands.
