Sutton: Rodgers needs to stop messing with Celtic trio and make a definitive decision
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has said that Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers needs to stop messing around by rotating his centre forwards and make a definitive decision on who is his number one option.
The former Liverpool manager has utilised a trio of options this season in the form of Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard, switching them out due to fitness and form as the club have competed on four fronts this season.
The Scottish international has been most favoured during the campaign, with 11 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions, while Dembele has 8 in 21 and Edouard 5 in 15.
However Sutton says now is the time for Rodgers to nail down his options and pick a regular starter, although himself admitted that might be a tough decision considering the quality of striker at his disposal.
He wrote in his blog for the Daily Record: “The manager now has a decision.
“Rodgers has been juggling three into one position and it hasn’t really served to bring the best out of any of the trio so far this season.
“It’s a tough choice and, while Dembele has age, time and physicality on his side, I can’t split him and Griffiths. They are both top strikers who have stepped up in big games.
“When they are on the pitch and I watch them, I always feel something is going to happen. I can’t split them.”
“Edouard is being judged against Dembele and Griffiths and that’s just not fair. If you judge him on his own merits, he’s doing alright and there looks to be potential in there to develop.
“Edouard’s time will come, but he should be third in the pecking order.”
The summer signing is on a season-long loan spell from French giants Paris Saint Germain, and the 20-year-old has seen himself feature in eight of the last 10 matches for the Hoops, as well as starting the 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Brechin City and 2-1 win over Partick Thistle in what were the club’s last two matches.
In other Celtic news, a rival’s manager has confirmed a reunion with the club is off after internal issues.
