'That would be unbelievable' - Exclusive: Darren Bent wowed by Leeds pursuit as 'It'd be a coup'

Darren Bent was amazed that Leeds United were in pursuit of Southampton forward Che Adams as he claimed that would be an unbelievable signing for the club to make.

Speaking exclusively Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England striker said it would be a coup if Leeds could sign the Saints forward but doubted whether they could pull a deal off.

Football Insider recently revealed that the Whites had registered an interest in signing the 23-year-old forward with them unsure whether Eddie Nketiah would stay at Elland Road beyond January.

Bent explained that with Adams not being a first-team regular for Saints then Marcelo Bielsa’s side may be able to get him, but then quickly changed his mind as he wondered why the Premier League club would let anyone go.

When asked if Leeds moving for Adams is a good move as he’s not getting loads of minutes at Southampton, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, they might be able to get him because while he is getting some minutes at Southampton, he hasn’t scored yet.

“It would kill him a little bit if Southampton send him back to the Championship as he has shown signs that he could get goals in the Premier League.

“So if Leeds can get him, that would be a great signing, it would be unbelievable, it’d be a coup.

“But whether they’re going to be able to get him, I just don’t know as the way Southampton are going, I can’t see anyone being let go as they’re fighting desperately against relegation and getting results they have no business getting.

“Ings didn’t play on Boxing Day, Che Adams played upfront against Chelsea, yes he didn’t score but he helped his side get a massive result.

“So why let him go out on loan as if Danny Ings gets injured, then what?”

Adams has featured 16 times this season and while he is yet to score, he has registered one assist.

The 23-year-old joined the Saints in the summer from Birmingham City after scoring 22 goals in 46 Championship outings in his 2018/19 campaign.
